Day 5
Company Visit/s:
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority
Today, I went to…
From the very first day of the trip, we had never escaped ourselves to heavy flow of public utility vehicles. As we travel each road, we stop, noticed caution and we go. I was once asked of how was all of these things happen and on what kind arrangement does it follow. Red, green and yellow. These are all colors that signifies Metropolitan Manila Development Authority or popularly known as MMDA.
When I’ve got to hear news that could either be in television or radio broadcast, what I only hear about MMDA is complains and flaws. There are several questions of how was the kind of their management is that the flow of traffic is still unmanageable and the like. Before I was able to visit MMDA, I really don’t have the idea of how does it works. But now, I can now able to share something that somehow even to worst of MMDA, it is still an achievement of having that kind of technology and ways of helping to manage and control the heavy flow of traffic.
What I learned…
I’m so excited to write about this segment. The things that I learned were not that magnificent (I guess) for others but for me it is really it. We all know that in every road aside from road signs, we all have what we call as traffic lights indicated by the colors red, green and yellow. These are the least that I know added by the pedestrian lane J. Now, it is only during the visit that I know that it has a controller that dictates whose going red, yellow or green in different locations. Aside that it serves as an indicator of how long will be the duration of that certain color, its changes also depends on the number of vehicles.
With regards to the detection of the number of vehicles, there is what we call as detector underground. It is located in the near intersection or in the stop line which is 11.5 m before the stop line. Each detector has CPU’s like that of a computer and is connected to the controller which implements every data that it receives. It uses the programs formula transformation and assembler.
Another thing, each intersection is connected to the server so to control the flow of data and lastly the server decides to change the duration of the time. It uses multiplexer as a communication line between intersection and servers.
With regards to their Communications and Command Center they have a 24/7 communication service that caters emergency responses such as ordinances, complaints and comments and suggestions. Aside from that, MMDA also has Road Safety Surveillance System which includes 50 units of CCTV camera in Metro Manila. Inside the CCTV is an IP camera which is wireless, has CP antenna to reach the data of IP camera. It is designated to each unit and they also make use of fiber optics. Through this, it captures vehicular accident anytime anywhere.
What I liked…
Personally, I like all the strategies that they had been introducing to us, the tweet deck which is for comments and suggestions, for the CCTV camera good surveillance, for the detector the server and the intersection which all helps for the good flow of vehicles in the highway. To sum it all, they indeed have a good strategic planning. That is why I keep on asking myself of why it still has a not so good effect to the real scenario. Well of course, I just saw the positive side of the story. I just don’t know if what the other side might tell me.
What I didn’t like…
Stated a while ago, we only have seen the bright and working side of the company that is why I can’t really site any form of negativity other than hearing the word “expensive” by one of our speaker in the said company. It happened when once a member of our group suggested of using this kind of server (I guess), then he exclaimed it to be something that the company or the government can’t afford. I know it somehow that that suggestion of my co-team could really help in receiving data from the intersection it’s just that its too costly. For me it’s a thumb down since they can’t provide of what is best for their clients.
